Although scientists like to point out that it takes X number of days (21, 24, 30, etc.) to form a new habit, in my experience that has never been true. Lifelong dietary habits, for example, take much longer, and you shouldn't feel bad about that - you...

I definitely agree Cynthia. My ultimate goal is not really to lose weight so much as 1) improve my health and 2) make those habits unconscious. But realistically, I think the second goal is going to take years, and I'm finally OK with that.

Honestly... I think the 30 days to form a habit is just hype. It can take me much longer to form good habits. Plus, any good habit formed always seems to be at risk if I start to come under stress. Like, the time I made all kinds of good exercise and eating habits and lost 62 pounds in a year... then my mother died unexpectedly and between grief and other life stresses that happened, I dropped the habits one by one and gained all the weight back.

For me, keeping my good habits is something I have to be conscious of at all times. It's very easy to slip back into the old habits that I've been doing all my life. Now, maybe if I keep my new good habits for several years, it will start to be more of an automatic thing. But only 30 days? Hah!

I just think of my weight loss plan as a lifestyle change... and when old habits strike, I just jump back into my new and better habits as fast as I can.
