Excellent information. Very well detailed and clearly explained.

With your comment on breakfast not being the most important meal, I beg to differ and also agree with you at the same time. In Australia, many many people who want to lose weight skip breakfast (and lunch) and by dinner are shoveling junk down their throats like there's no tomorrow; frustrated that their "diet" isn't working.

I believe that breakfast is the most important meal in that you should never skip it and always eat within an hour of waking up, so your body has fuel to burn through the day.

What you eat is important. Complex carbs, lean protein and some unsaturated fats should make up a moderately sized breakfast but as you say, it's important not to eat too much for any meal.

"25. Educate yourself on the diets of cultures that live longer and are generally in better health. " this is such a great advice! :) I personally look up to chineese and eating with chop sticks does the world of good in helping you slow down your eating speed :D

Thanks so much for this informative and well written post. Your philosophy reflects two Michael Pollan books I just read--"The Omnivore's Dilemma" and "In Defense of Food". My hope is that this trend of eating real, whole, natural food, rather than adopting an unrealistic diet of deprivation, seriously catches on in our country. Good luck and keep up the good work.

@Healthy Amelia: Thanks! I'm really glad you found it useful. I'm also going to be writing a new version soon, with things I've learned since I wrote this piece. It's such a learning process!

Thank you so much for this comprehensive list. I’m going to add a link to this post on my blog so that I can refer to it often. You have succinctly summed up how I want to go about losing weight and being healthier.

That's a great list Metroknow. I think I should start making a list of some of the things I've learnt as well. The more we share the more we learn.

I think that last point of yours is the most important. Slow and steady wins the race.

@Tee: Thank you for the kind words. I'm really working on trying to make this site useful to folks like me - those of us who find that in the long haul, extreme solutions don't "stick". I'd love to hear how the suggestions turn out, and if you have further suggestions on things that you've found that work please feel free to share. Its a process for me, so I'm learning as I'm going, but after 20 years of working on this problem (with no success until now (fingers crossed)), I discovered that I know a thing or two about how my body responds and to which things it really doesn't.

In truth, I think most of us who've struggled with this actually know more about ourselves than we think we do - we're just so buried in product messaging and conflicting scientific information that we forget to listen to ourselves, and maybe more importantly, the common sense that was passed down for hundreds of years before we decided to industrialize our process of eating and finding food.

Take care, and thanks again - comments like yours really inspire me to keep going!

You hit the nail on the head for so many things I do. Especially eatting in front of the computer (and sometimes tv at the same time.) I will definetly be adding these tips to my next meal. For some reason this information sounds so much more doable coming for a regular person like me.

I wanted to thank you for taking the time to write all of this for us struggling with out weight...and for helping me finally see its the little things that can make all the difference, no hardcore strict diets of rabbit food. I look forward to making a change (after all the failed attempts)

Thanks again!!
