Love Michael Pollan!

Anyway, you nailed the reasons for your plateau... sounds like there is a bit of stress in your life leading to the resumption of the old habit friends. It happens. We formed the less desirable habits over years, it's all too easy to revert to them under stress. Take it a step at a time if you need to to get back on track.

Getting the exercise in will be tough at first... but will help with stress and sleep once you are in the habit! And yeah, sometimes you have to "walk away from the blog" and put your exercise and sleep first, LOL! Mind you, then, like me, you might feel guilty for posting less! But it's like anything else... all in moderation!

@Joy: That actually makes me happy, because that book is one of my primary inspirations for my method right now. It is very, very highly recommended.

Although I don't go on diets, you make good points with your 'habits'. With the juice, unless the juice your drinking is freshly made, you're getting more sugar than you'd want from juice. Drink lots of water, too.

Your post reminds me of the book I'm reading, "In Defense of Food". The author talks about how all these diets have achieved the opposite of what they were intended to do. People are swayed back and forth depending on "new studies", and new super nutrient, etc. But all we really need is go back to the basics: "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." I usually stick to common sense with my eating, and (as my ancestors woul say) not eating stuff whose original source I don't recognize on the food itself (e.g. processed food). The more I cook food from scratch for myself, the easier it is for me to manage my health...at least I think so.

@Andrew: Yep, but where's the fun in no voices all the time? :)

Kryptonite - ha! nice analogy.

@Christine: I do a pretty good Sean Connery impression. I could record it and you can somehow wire it to the scale if you like. :)

You got the problems all nailed down. That is the main thing. When I hit a plateau I do a reassessment. Almost always I find habits that I have slowly been slipping back into or good things that I have started slacking on. I would like to know where you got the talking scale. I could use a little amusement in the morning.

I think they have some pills you can take to stop the voices. :)

I have to watch all the things you watch as well. Especially the bread. Bread is my kryptonite. Sleep is a distant memory with my little baby daughter in the house as well. :)

But yeah...take it one day at a time. That's the key.

@Heidi: Thank you for your kind words, and the good advice. I actually do that too, the protein thing. I haven't done it yet this time around per se, but I always keep it as an option. I am turning it rather into a motivating force to get back to running, which I need to do regardless of the rate of weight loss.

@Paul: Paul, my brother. Paul, my brother. Thank you my brother. Thank you for existing.

I know how frustrating those plateaus can be! I get them once in awhile but they do seem to eventually give in when you work it (which you obviously are doing). I will say that the one thing I can always count on when I hit them is to do the protein and nuts for 2-3 days with water. It works for me everytime (not sure how healthy it is but I figure in small doses okay.). love your blog! Good luck

start small and
continue small
until the exercise
is boring --then push yourself
with plenty of time
before and after for
stretching and
deep breathing

morning is best
