If you're concerned with what you eat, you are bound to run into the ongoing argument surrounding conventional vs. organic produce. I sometimes try to buy organic but in the end I think it doesn’t really matter as long as I’m actually eating fruit and vegetables!
This is a very big topic for me. I do not want to eat chemicals. Chemicals are not going to make us live longer. Even if you take the organic out of the picture, food just tastes better if it’s not laced in chemicals. It’s all about what is important to people. I put a lot of thought and care into what food my family eats because it’s that important to me.
It might not be important to someone else and I’m ok with that, as long as they don’t have me over for a meal.
I would like to suggest anyone who really cares about the toxins we live with or anyone still on the fence about the harm toxins are doing to us, read The Hundred-Year Lie, by Randall Fitzgerald. We will never get away from the toxins on Earth but we can do a lot to protect our health, it’s little things done everyday.
I could go on about the benefit of organics but it would turn into a rant and that’s really not my style.

It is a difficult question whether or not to eat organic, and your post got me thinking. Before addressing that issue, we first we need to make healthy eating choices, like you and another commentator said, including sufficient fresh friut and veg in our diet should be the first step and then we can go on from there.

I try my best to purchase organic products because as you have mentioned, I do not want the chemicals to be sitting in my body from produce that has been sprayed with countless pesticides. There is only so much we know and so much we can do, and I choose to just take the organic route, even if it may cost a bit more. I have noticed increases in produce (and gas) over the past few weeks. Purchasing organic have increased my grocery bill by about 30%, if not more. But I do have the luxury to purchase such items, and it gives me a peace of mind that I am purchasing from local farmers.
@Sexy at any size: I think you are spot-on — no matter which way you go on organics vs. conventional, the most important factor is eating fruits and vegetables, period. Thanks for your thoughts!
@Conscious Snob: We do the same, but for us the cost difference is substantially less than 30% – mostly due to the fact that as part of my dietary changes, I’m simply eating less than I was before. So the cost of better food has been somewhat offset by a reduction in quantity, because honestly the quantity plus the junk is, I think, what got me into this mess.

When I can purchase organics, I do. My husband and I are fortunate to be able to afford it, at least some of the time. But honestly, in my area, organic produce is often not an option. Simply not available. And produce in general is not that fresh out here anyway, so then it often comes down to what is fresh! I don’t care how organic it is if it is rotting right there in front of me in the store, LOL!
Still, I was quite happy the other day to see organic zucchini on sale and reasonably fresh at that!
I hope to grow some produce this summer, though with the long winter here, it’s getting to be a late start! That, I think, is the best option! Pick it when it’s ripe and most full of nutrients!
Anyone remember Adele Davis? She was the most influential, scholarly author of popular health food books in the 1960s. She documented all kinds of ways to change your diet to avoid cancer. You couldn’t be a college student in the 1960s without owning at least three of her paperbacks.
She died of cancer.
She destroyed faith in ‘health food’ for at least a generation.

I understand that the debate is strong about convertional vs. organic, but I would like to say it depends on the soil where the organic produce is harvested.
