People are so obsessed with proving this is right or this is wrong yet they forget to ask if what someone's doing is working for them. There is no right or wrong there's what works for you.

Some solid advice here, especially in regards to not wasting your time thinking about the past. Unfortunately for me, my brain doesn't work that way. I will never learn from my mistakes, so it's best to avoid situations where those mistakes can occur :).

"It doesn’t generally require a lot of analysis when you make a mistake; it requires action."

Isn't this how it is for many of our mistakes? We like to sit around and pretend like the situation requires analysis, but it doesn't. It requires action.

When I had a lot of student loan debt, I thought that I needed to study balance sheets and analyze the numbers, but what I really need to do was spend less money than I made. Paralysis by analysis because it is easy to do nothing.

At least that's how it is for me.

This was especially salient to me:
"You already know why you ate it – it’s what you do next that really matters.."

It really is important to move on and get back into the positive flow of thinking about things. It's all part of "<a href="http://www.getfitslowly.com/2010/03/02/want-to-lose-more-weight-stick-to-a-routine/" rel="nofollow">rewiring your brain regarding food."</a>

Great analogy! I've learned to think about food completely differently, have accepted that I will eat outrageous stuff from time to time, don't freak out, just shrug and move on. Try not to do it too often. If I don't get emotional, I won't freak out and binge, or even stuff myself.

Cigarettes follow this path better. I have quit about 20 times, and there's always some mistake, usually involving alcohol, that slipped me up. They are different, because if you haven't had a smoke in 3 weeks, and you have one, you're pretty much back to being a smoker, three weeks is gone. No matter how much I didn't agree in theory, or didn't like, that's how it was. I learned not to drink in the first month after quitting. I remembered to remember that I can't get away with just a little. I made mistake after mistake, had to start over every time. It wasn't as much fun as it sounds.

Food, of course, is different, as we have to learn to be comfortable with it, not afraid of it, use it for health and happiness, not emotional band-aid, numbing drug, etc. It was all psychological for me, and I had to learn to think of it differently. But if nothing is off limits, there's no reason for me to feel bad, and if I eat a chocolate cupcake, I just eat one (or more likely half of one-really), exercise a bit more or eat a bit less the next day. Or not, but don't eat three cupcakes, and don't eat again the next day. This is hard to do if they are too accessible, which is why I don't keep brownies, ice cream, potato chips, etc. in house, but I may eat if they're free or convenient, but just a little. I have adjusted my taste buds, I love a little, too much feels oversugared, greasy, heavy in my tummy, etc. I had to do it this way, the willpower thing failed me every time.

You're right, I like the second opening better...

Wow, I never thought about success in those terms. You are absolutely right. The more experience you have, the quicker you can fix your mistakes. That is quite an enlightened thought.

I gotta go recover from a really big mistake now....
