Our Kids Know Real Food
It seems that our kids are paying attention to what we eat.
Over the weekend we went to visit our friends at Ma Petite Maison in Port Orford, Oregon (I wrote previously about their beautiful place here: “A Taste of France on the Oregon Coast“). Port Orford is a tiny town with about 1100 people, no stop lights, a handful of restaurants, and a lot of virtually empty beachfront. It’s an exceptional spot to visit if you want peace, quiet, long uninterrupted walks on the beach, and more than just a little local quirkiness.
Port Orford has it’s share of 4th of July weekend activities not unlike most places: a morning parade of local groups ranging from muscle cars and fire trucks to a family of 4-wheelers with kids dressed in camouflage shooting high-powered squirt guns (I was not aware that this was a symbol of patriotism, but I now know better); a man who wakes the town each year by driving a truck around with loudspeakers attached, proclaiming, “GOOOOOOOOD MORNING PORT ORFORD. SEVEN AM ON YET ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL FOURTH OF JULY!”; A craft fair and quilting exhibition; a pretty good fireworks display, and a variety of weekend food-related activities.
I decided to get up early with my almost-6-yr-old and take him to a pancake feed that was being presented at the community center. I didn’t think much about the food that would be available; I was more interested in doing something just as father and son, since his little sister being a feisty 3-yr-old often grabs much of the family’s attention.
When we arrived, we stood in line for a while waiting for the food, stomachs rumbling and my son hopping on one foot from time to time. I eavesdropped that the griddles were not getting very hot, and thus the wait – but folks didn’t seem to mind. Eventually we were handed our Styrofoam plates which laid the foundation for pancakes, scrambled eggs, and a slice or two of ham. From all appearances, this is a reasonable meal – unless you are a 5-yr-old in Real Food training.
I should pause for a moment to mention that our kids are not at all picky eaters. My son will eat almost anything, although he doesn’t care for mashed potatoes for some reason. He eats any kind of salad, beets, broccoli, fish, all cheeses including goat cheese and feta – and loves to try any hot sauce that I have, no matter how hot. We don’t cook separate meals for our kids; they eat what we eat (and yes, we count ourselves lucky).
After we sat down, I put the standard pat of mostly-frozen butter on my son’s pancakes, added a little syrup, and cut up a few pancake bites for him. The pancakes were what you might expect from a “pancake feed”; certainly made from water and generic pancake mix (consisting of a lot of I-don’t-wanna’-know-but-I’m-eating-it-anyway ingredients), and cooked completely through. On the other hand, the syrup was, to be honest, pretty awful. It was the cheapest you can get, and tasted like what I imagine burnt corn syrup and food coloring with a motor oil chaser tastes like. Not so good. It was incredibly sweet however – In fact I thought to myself, “ya know, if you just want ultra-sweet and can ignore the chemical aftertaste, this stuff is just the thing.” And lest I sound like a total snob here (oh who am I kidding), let me just say that nobody of any economic strata should eat that syrup, although I suspect it does keep dentists in business.
After a few minutes of eating, my son put his spork down and looked up at me.
“Dad…” he said quietly and with crinkled nose, “…Do you…like…the eggs?”
“They’re OK. A little undercooked I’d say.” The eggs were clearly “egg product” out of a carton – something he’s really never had before.
“Dad, I don’t like them. Maybe they need salt.”
He shook a little salt from the shaker onto the eggs, took a bite, and made a face like he was eating salty cooked dirt (probably the face he saw when I ate the syrup). At this point I noticed that he was right – these runny scrambled eggs were not only undercooked, but had almost no flavor at all. I added salt too.
He moved on to the ham.
He put the 4-inch medallion of glazed ham on his spork and started eating around the edges. I took a bite from my ham too and noticed that it was incredibly sweet – at home we eat a fair amount of pork that we buy from a local farmer, but never canned or honey-glazed from the grocery store.
Without saying a word, he looked at it as if examining a new species of pink floppy tropical fish that he had just caught on an improvised spear, and before I could stop him he removed the ham and chucked it like a Frisbee several feet across the end of the table and into the Rubbermaid 40-gallon garbage can. This is certainly not behavior that I endorse, but it was all I could do not to laugh. He was right – the meat was questionable at best compared to the pork he’s used to.
Finally, he dug into the pancakes. After 5 or 6 bites, he said, “Dad…I think I’m getting a stomach-egg…” – That’s stomach ache, for those not familiar with the vernacular. Stomach egg indeed.
“You don’t have to finish. Let’s get going.”
We cleaned up our spot, dropped the remains in the trash, and headed to the car. My son settled into his booster seat, buckled up, and looked out the window.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“I’m hungry.”
UPDATE: One little bit to clear up: Despite my attempt at some levity here, to be clear I am tremendously grateful for the work that is accomplished by the organization that put on the event. I deliberately left their name out of the piece originally because I didn’t want to offend, but turning it to the positive I think some good can come of mentioning the details. Specifically, thank you to the Rotary Club of Port Orford who generously put on this event and according to their President, Rick Francona, has “awarded almost $100,000 in scholarships through fundraisers just like this one.” Thank you, and my sincere apologies to any readers who found this offensive – that was far from the intent. (Maybe next time I’ll just bring my own syrup and keep my trap shut

Taking it a step further, I strongly and sincerely recommend donating to your local and national Rotary Club, or even better, volunteering – they are a secular, volunteer-run organization that does immensely good work globally. Kids are no dummies, good for him for speaking up! I always have food with me (Lara bars mostly) for just this issue. I also like to bring fresh fruit and yogurt if I am going to a pancake breakfast (mostly 1x a year at the Twin Oaks Airpark), everyone stares at me, but then ends up telling me what a great idea it is.

Im still stunned at the things my daughter notices (the bad and the good).

I wish you would have mentioned it right then and we would have tried to make it right. Ridiculing us later on the internet really doesn’t serve any useful purpose. My apologies for having offended you – that was far from the intent. In fact, you may note that I didn’t mention the Rotary Club by name in the piece – that was no accident. I was telling a story about my 6-year-old who now has different food expectations due to our family’s choice to prioritize higher quality food over other material things, which I am frankly proud of.
With regard to Rotary, for the record I am an active supporter of the Rotary Club and am very grateful for the generous work accomplished through the genuine, heartfelt, and tireless efforts of its members. I was very glad (and it was my intent) on that day to support the Rotary Club through my cash donation. I wasn’t so much buying breakfast as donating to the cause. In fact, I considered the food to be very secondary to my personal objective: showing my son what it means to support the community including veterans and community leaders deserving of tremendous respect and gratitude. I didn’t take him there that morning to show him what good food is; I took him to show him a side of community activism that I want him to grow up to value, respect, and support.
As to “doesn’t really serve any useful purpose” however, I respectfully (and strongly) disagree. The focus of this site is to bring attention to the types of foods that we as a culture choose (or roll over and accept) to represent us as a whole. And for most of us (myself included up until a few years ago), our choices are frankly deplorable at best, and literally killing us at worst. I write Almost Fit in an attempt to help to change that food culture away from our national obsession with processed industrial food to supporting small sustainable farms and local small businesses who produce the foods that we should be eating for health, as well as promoting the family values of prioritizing better quality food over quantity in how we choose to spend our money. It is certainly not my place to tell you how to run a benefit (I wouldn’t know where to begin, though I have volunteered many times in other contexts), but if pieces like this get well-intentioned folks to consider maybe supporting local farmers by buying their pastured eggs, or gets readers to give what they put into their mouths a second thought, then I consider my work here to be very, very worthwhile.
Writing pieces like this brings the notion of thinking about our food culture to the table, and that to me is well worth discussing in a public forum such as this, and is long overdue in our country. This piece was part entertainment and part suggestion that maybe we ought to ask ourselves what we are putting into our bodies a little more often because clearly if a 6-year-old can do it, I can too. Again, my apologies that it didn’t feel that way to you.
That said, to make my position of support for Rotary clear, I’ve updated the piece with further details on how people can support your very worthy and honorable organization. I mean that in all sincerity, and wish you and your hardworking volunteers a heartfelt thanks.

That is amazing! I grew up on fast food and snacky-processed food. Over the past 5 years, I have made a concerted effort to not only get myself away from the ‘dead’ foods being sold on our supermarkets shelves, but have also worked on getting my parents and brothers (no sisters) to eat better.
So far, I have had an uphill battle, but I can start to see the changes slowly happening. Less junk food, more veggies (not much yet!), less beef and pork and more chicken and turkey. I will, when (read ‘if’) I have children, I will make sure to get him/her started on the right foot towards healthful living.

Kids form strong opinions about food, and it happens in a hurry. I know when we try to deviate our kids diets, they take notice quickly. And they’re not shy about speaking up, either. So, good for him.

As a newbie to your blog, I have to say I’m incredibly impressed with your frankness and truthful writing. The gentleman that chose to name the Rotary as the source of your meal, was clearly speaking out of passion and it’s easy to understand that it is a cause dear to his heart. However, I think the point was missed – that, although the meal provided was lackluster, you have provided your child with the experience and know-how to recognized processed foods. Frankly, I’m annoyed that you’ve been required to apologize for your honesty and personal experience. That is what blogs are for – sharing how you feel and the way you view the world. And I think you have a wonderful voice and were not in the least bit rude. Kudos to you!
Kids do appreciate good food if they’re allowed to have it. Mine have just been to a party where all that was on offer was sweets, pizza and chicken nuggets – they came back starving!

Kids are honest its one of their great traits that gets lost (unfortunately) as they get older. I didn’t think negatively of the charity you were going to, the food wasn’t their priority. Raising money is, as it should be. I always think of events like that as “hey thanks for donating and here is some food as thanks” (an extra if you will). Glad you took your child to this experience and interesting that he is so well adjusted in food tasting. Can’t wait to read more.
On an unrelated note: Looking for suggestions on music to listen to when I work out. My resolution for 2011 is to find more high energy music than the normal Top 40 stuff. All Healthy foods are good for all children.
Fresh fruits,vegetables,good lean protein.whole grains,low fat yogurt and cheese.
Consider the balance of omega.Ground flax-seed is a good choice,in oatmeal or whole grain cereal.Extra virgin olive oil is another for cooking or salad dressing.To avoid sugar as much as possible,a little more each day.
At month of later they won’t even miss it!!
I drive through Port Orford sometimes when i’m down in Bandon, I remember some decent food in that town.

Indeed, all of the kids in this world isn’t dumb!
Kids sees things in a different angle as adults do, so they might see something adults don’t.
But alot foods are contaminated nowadays, so me must be really sure what we are actually eating.
A good example would be china tainted milk that killed thousands of innocent babies.

The more we educate the youth on better eating the healthier our next generation will be. We need better education when it comes to nutrition in our society.

I came across your blog when looking up information on French baguettes. We just came back from 5 days in Paris and it was amazing to see folks running along with their baguette in hand. So many Americans give up bread when they want to lose weight. 6 years ago, I lost 30 lbs and went down 6 dress sizes. I totally changed my eating habits, started reading labels and won’t buy anything packaged or processed. I still eat deserts, but make them at home. I’ve maintained my weight because of the healthy choices I make 95% of the time. Bad food really does taste bad. I don’t fry anything anymore and my kids have gotten to where they prefer the baked versions of normally fried foods. You are doing the right thing with your child which is obvious by his realization that the food he was eating wasn’t really worth having.
